Dragon’s Back ridge, on the far eastern side of The Island, is one of the most popular hiking spots in Hong Kong, and incidentally is home to some of the most scenic paragliding in the region.
The takeoff area (Google Maps location: https://goo.gl/maps/iR4UV9umGr1JiA1PA ) is actually lower than the other paragliding spots, but the flight takes you some 3 kilometres along the Dragon and then onto Cape D’Aguilar, on the other side of Windy Gap.

A Never Ending “Adventurous Journey”
Along the way you have the beautiful mountain on one side, stunning greens of Shek O Country Club on the other, and the magnificent South China Sea in the back. During flight you take in amazing views of Shek O, Big Wave Bay, and Stanley, as well as Tai Tam Country Park, Tung Lung Chau, and other parts of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, TKO, Clearwater Bay, and on particularly clear days, remote Ninepin and Dangan islands.
The ridge is home to a large kite population, so it is not uncommon to end up flying side-by-side with these sociable and curious birds. Likewise, we regularly encounter kestrels searching for prey near Shek O Peak. Occasionally, you will spot a wild boar or two rummaging in the bushes below.
Getting There
The meeting spot for Dragon’s Back flights is either at Shau Kei Wan MTR station OR at Lan Nai Wan bus stop (Google Maps Location: https://goo.gl/maps/FnSkD56rpCbWUtbK7 )
This is an intermediate trailhead for Dragon’s Back. Alternately, we may choose to meet in Shek O Village, near the landing beach.
(Landing beach location: https://goo.gl/maps/MTtELBaW345m5ZR26 )
The easiest way to get to Lan Nai Wan bus stop or Shek O is on bus #9 from Shau Kei Wan, or by a taxi/Uber. If taking a taxi, you most definitely need to make sure the driver is taking you to the correct spot as very often people end up at the regular trailhead at To Tei Wan, which is most certainly the wrong place to be for paragliding.
