Located on the forested slopes of Lantau Island’s Sunset Peak
(Google Maps Location: https://goo.gl/maps/i8BYWRB11anumSX49),
Lantau is a magnificent paragliding site. Flyable during South or South-East wind conditions (usually March through August), the takeoff is some 400 metres above sea level, while the landing is at Cheung Sha Beach, right outside the lovely Welcome Beach Resort.
The flights take us over the tropical jungles of Lantau South Country Park, often alongside the very popular South Lantau Country Trail. You will take in views of South Lantau, notably Pui O, Cheung Sha, and Tong Fuk, as well as Chi Ma Wan Peninsula, Cheung Chau and Soko Islands. On clear days you will get a glimpse of both Hong Kong Island as well as Macau and Zhuhai.

A Never Ending “Adventurous Journey”
Depending on wind conditions, we either climb up using ridge lift of the winds pressing against the mountain, or we soar upwards like eagles on currents of warm air rising off the rocks, roads, and village parking lots. In fact, it is not uncommon here to be joined in flight by black kites or even sea eagles.
This site is one of the most unusual paragliding locations around the world, for it is only 3 miles (5 km) away from Hong Kong International Airport. It is not common for paraglider activity to be authorized this close to a major airport, but the paragliding community has obtained necessary permissions from the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, as long as we follow site-specific rules and procedures.
Getting There
The easiest way of getting to the Lantau takeoff site is to make your way to the Pak Kung Au trailhead of the Lantau / Sunset Peak Trail.

Take the MTR to Tung Chung Station and either take a Lantau Taxi (Blue taxi) outside exit D or bus 11 or 3M (either at the Tung Chung terminus or across the street from Exit A/D. Do not take a red taxi or an Uber as they are not allowed to drive to the south side of Lantau Island without a permit.
The bus ride will take about 12-15 minutes before you get to Pak Kung Au. Get off at the bus stop and make your way up to the Sunset Peak trailhead gazebo. Once near the gazebo, look for a sign for “Nam Shan”. You most definitely do not want to hike up to the top of Sunset Peak, instead, follow the lower trail towards Nam Shan for 1.2km (20-25 minute) mostly level hike along the South Lantau Country Trail to the paragliding takeoff area.
